Crash ‘shook building’ Rangi Ruru musicians awarded – p5
CRUSHED: The wall of the Redwood flat which was hit, nobody was inside at the time. BY EMMA-JANE MCLENNAN A driver allegedly ran a red light and sped across four lanes of oncoming traffic before crashing into a Redwood flat on Thursday night. He narrowly missed nearby traffic lights and trees, hit the curb and crushed a hedge on the way. It happened at the intersection of Main North Rd and Daniels Rd. The front window and wall of the flat was smashed on impact, and the driver had to be cut from the car by the Fire Service. Nobody was in the flat at the time. Neighbour Jinder Reddy was watching Shortland Street when she heard – and felt – the impact. “I got the shock of my life. There
was a big bang and you could hear it shattering. It sort of shook the building,” she said. Ms Reddy was sitting just metres away, in her lounge room next door to the affected flat. She ran outside to see what had happened. She said the car had turned left, into oncoming traffic, instead of turning right towards Belfast. No other people or cars were hit. Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.37pm. “They cut the driver out of the car. He wasn’t making any noise or fuss, he just got out,” Ms Reddy said. The driver was treated by paramedics in the ambulance, while the passenger disappeared from the scene.

Hours of practice and a dedication to succeed has been rewarded for a Marian College barbershop quartet, after taking home silver medals. The students took second place at the Young Singers in Harmony regional competition, a place up from their bronze medals in the competition last year. With barbershop traditionally arranged for male voices – The Marianettes – year 12 students Megan Southorn and Jochebed Mabazza and year 13 students Sweta George and Elizabeth Everingham, had to learn female equivalent tenor, lead, baritone and bass parts.
“Barbershop singing is great fun but really challenging,” said Sweta. “So it’s been fantastic that we have gone to the next level with our performance this year.” Sweta said it was always tricky learning to hear other parts while still singing your own, “but it’s getting easier the more that we do.” With Sweta and Elizabeth both leaving Marian College at the end of this year, both Megan and Jochebed hope to build on this year’s success with new members in the quartet next year. “We have a lot of girls keen to join, so hopefully The Marianettes can go for gold in 2015,” Sweta said.
Police are preparing a plan to launch a community partnership in Papanui. A survey of Papanui business owners has been held to identify problems in the suburb which a community partnership group could help to solve. Christchurch Police community services manager Senior Sergeant Philip Dean said that most businesses that responded to the survey said they did not have safety concerns. But he said the group could deal with a variety of issues in

the community, and the police could be a lot more effective in dealing with problems at their root if the community was involved. Papanui Business Association president David Fifield said he did not have any specific concerns about crime in the area, believed closer work with the police would be a good thing for the community. “It is a very good idea. One of our aims is to get more businesses involved in getting a stronger community feeling here, and I believe this could help.”

Push for community centre ideas
‘CEREC’ & cosmetic dentistry
A community meeting will be held in October to collect ideas for a new St Albans community centre. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board asked last week for community consultation on the centre to happen as soon as possible. They want to include plans for the centre in the next city council long-term plan, so

funding can be set aside for the project. A transitional St Albans Community Centre has been set up on Colombo St, but the lease will expire in April 2016. Community board chairman Mike Davidson said it was possible the lease could be extended, but that was not certain. He said the community needed “something concrete” to move forward with. “The community is crying out
for a permanent community facility, and we want to work with them to make that happen.” He said that both the location and options for the centre were still open for discussion. Ideas raised include combining it with public facilities such as a community pool or a cafe, or with private business or residential spaces to help pay for construction of the centre. Mr Davidson said the public meeting would be a chance for

the community to have its say. “We need to have a vision for St Albans, so we don’t want to close any doors at the moment. We want to discuss all of our options. “We can’t make any promises at the moment, but we can listen to what the community wants.” A date and time for the public meeting has not yet been set, but it has been scheduled for the first week of October.

Awards for Rangi Ruru musicians Rangi Ruru Girls’ School chamber music group Eklamoré has taken home one of two awards from the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest National Finals held last week in Christchurch. Year 12 musicians Grace Leehan (violin), Amy Ga Hee Lee (piano) and Geeny Moon (French Horn) received the KBB Award for the best group containing any of woodwind, brass or percussion. Fellow student group Trio Emporté, comprising Grace Leehan (violin), Jenny Park (cello) and Siyu Sun (piano), was also selected as one of only six groups to compete in the national finals. Rangi Ruru director of music Janet Kingsbury said both groups were superb in their performances. “I am so proud of, and delighted for the girls, they have worked so hard over many months. What was equally wonderful to see was their total enjoyment in their performances and sheer delight in every aspect of the contest – on and off the stage. “The true Rangi spirit comes through, and so many people commented not only on the high quality of the performances, but of the girls’ positive and inclusive demeanour throughout the entire two days.”

Pupils on goodwill mission for elderly Kirkwood Intermediate School pupils have made gifts for residents at St Nicholas Hospital, a care home for the elderly. The 19 pupils spent seven weeks designing and creating the gifts for the residents. Pupils made cushions with a Kiwiana theme from vintage woollen blankets, appliqued small bags for medical equipment and larger bags for residents to attach to walker-frames. They also made colourful fabric activity books for residents, who have limited mobility. The books will stimulate and encourage hand exercise for joints stiff with arthritis. A Kirkwood spokeswoman said residents were “absolutely thrilled” with the gifts. “Faces, both young and elderly, GOODWILL: St Nicholas Hospital lit up into big smiles. It was a heart- resident Elva King with pupils Laura warming experience for everyone,” Grant, and Taylor Leary. she said.

Green Acres Canterbury ‘best of the best’ Green Acres Canterbury has beat 15 other franchises across the country to win Master Franchise of the Year 2014. Green Acres national franchise support manager Paul MacFarlane believed the growth in the Canterbury business and being awarded the franchise of the year stemmed from two things – trust and quality. “The Canterbury team have invested heavily in
training and support for their owner operators. Clients need to trust the people that come into their homes and businesses. “It is testament to the Canterbury team that the quality, reliability and trust they have developed with their clients is second to none. A fact that is backed up by the large number of new business coming from client referrals,” Mr MacFarlane said. Canterbury Master Fran-
chise owner John Lane was delighted with the award. “It’s fantastic to receive recognition for a great job, but really the most pleasing thing is that our business is enjoying great growth, many clients are being helped out and so many of our owner operators are succeeding and growing personally.” Business for the franchise has grown significantly in Canterbury, and has more than quadrupled in the last 10 years.

Late last week I stood at the rear of a house in Bewdley St, Spreydon, and reflected on just how unfair life can be. In front of me was the remains of a house that until that afternoon had been the family home of a very elderly couple. If the gardens remaining were anything to go by the house would have been immaculate and neat as a pin. Instead there was a mess of burnt and broken timbers. Everything was either destroyed or severely damaged by heat, smoke or fire. There was no insurance. In their 80s and 90s this couple had lost everything. That’s bloody unfair. The fire started from an unattended pot of oil on the stove. The house had pinex ceilings. Once the fire got going it ripped through the property. No amount of firefighting was ever going to save it. The owners have very generously agreed to the Fire Service running an “open home”
GUTTED: This house in Bewdley St will be open for viewing on Saturday, August 16. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN at their house. They don’t want others to go through what they have suffered. So from 9am to noon on Saturday, August 16, 25 Bewdley St will be open for anyone to have a look. It’s so damaged you wont be able to go inside. However, because it’s so damaged you will be able to clearly see the devastation. It will be a sobering experience. Our thanks go out to Age Concern which has found a furnished flat for the victims. And to the other agencies that helped. Still makes you want to cry though.

The story of the winter blues So you’re at home, it’s freezing outside, your environmentally friendly fire is blazing, there is a roast in the oven, with hot dessert to follow – who in their right mind wants to go to the gym. Maybe this isn’t the story of the winter blues then. The problem is, winter takes a toll on not only our body but also our mind. Often our best intentions of maintaining health and fitness throughout the year go out the window the moment the first frost hits. In winter our lives become a lot less active as we hibernate and eat our roasts, stews and hot puddings. The problem is that as humans we are designed to stay active, and when we are not, our energy levels, enthusiasm and motivation diminish, and along comes the inevitable increase in weight, belly measurement and clothing size. This has a follow-on effect in everyday life. It is harder to get up in the mornings and it’s harder to focus on the day ahead with family, work and social life.
to achieve something big, and to kick start a life of energy and drive through health and fitness. And they look great too! As you read this, look ahead - what does your achievement look like? Picture yourself mid-summer going to the beach, enjoying a BBQ at a friend’s place or hitting the golf course. How do you want to look and feel? Fit, healthy and full of energy? This image of yourself is your achievement, and it’s the start of a new lifestyle that also inspires others around you. By the way, there is no such thing as ‘I’m too old for this!’
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take!” Wayne Gretzky
The good news is winter does not last. However, the effects on us will, unless something is done about it. But how, you ask, I don’t have the energy or the motivation! The answer for us at Fitness Canterbury is simple and it comes down to one word - ‘achievement’, which ties in closely with motivation, enthusiasm and the all-important inspiration!
There is a reason why the Fitness Canterbury 12 Week Challenge is so popular with our members. It gives them the tools and encouragement
This is what we at Fitness Canterbury New Beginnings believe, and we package the attainment of your achievement up into a ‘12 Week Challenge’! One of our highly skilled personal trainers will design an exercise blueprint for your 12-week challenge. We have a facility built around your needs (we are Christchurch owned and operated so we can choose the equipment we know will give you the best results). And our culture is one of support and encouragement from staff and members alike.
We also have a great membership special running at the moment, along with our brand-new ‘Couples 12 Week Challenge’ category. So we’ll see you soon, before September 15, or why not take that first step and come in today to get started on your 12 Week Challenge!

Ben Reid and Anna Dalzell show their most recent work in an exhibition called ‘Nature Study’ at Little River Gallery Reid brings together a myriad of references that draw attention to the complexity of a relationship with the natural world that has been both exploitative and beneficial to humanity. Reid recognises there are no easy solutions yet his images retain a faith in the redemption of this

relationship with nature.
Anna Dalzell, Campground Tree
Dalzell recently moved to Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula from North Canterbury. The shift in landscape has inspired her to paint and draw the beauty of the environment around her. “Sitting in a room with a view I have been making quiet observations of this paradise. Finding moments of calm with line and colour”, she says.

A stunning collection at JNBY JNBY celebrates the elegance of women with their design-driven aesthetics and strong philosophy capturing the idea of beauty, comfort and style through their brand statement, “Just naturally be yourself ”.
C
old temperatures, which influence the double layer of clothing, are just about to end. Ready to replace those sweaters, coats and heavy fabrics is a lighter, more eloquent spring fashion. JNBY New Zealand, located on the corner of Aikmens and Papanui roads in the centre of Merivale, is an icon for their contemporary, design-driven women’s apparel. Their Spring/Summer 2014 to 2015 is their most composed collection yet, with minimalist geometric lines, a myriad of textiles and a sportswear flare. A hint of romance via draped silk and
lightweight wool adds a modern elegance. The designers of this season have received inspiration from vintage architecture, retro shapes, images and structures. The architecture collection highlights
neutral colour palettes with a strong sense of shapes and textures. The clothing selection plays with volume and shifting scales through the manipulation of fabrics and textures. The concept applies a minimalist approach while creating sharp shapes and silhouettes. The vintage theme collection highlights the artistry of JNBY’s incredible fabrics and textiles with feminine details and a soft colour palette. Nostalgia has never
looked so modern and so good. Spring offers a new beginning, a fresh start and a chance to dust off the cobwebs and wear lighter elegant fashion. Creams, whites, tan, beige, black and solid colours highlight this season’s colour palette. As the last days of winter are transitioning, stop by JNBY and get a jumpstart on your spring wardrobe. Visit their website at www.jnby.co.nz for a preview of the spring/summer collection and pop into their store to enjoy JNBY’s unique styles and excellent service.

he Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), under the baton of conductor Luke Di Somma, took an audience of children on a journey through the world of symphonic music recently. The concert, entitled CSO Kids, sponsored by the Friends of CSO and programmed for two to six year olds, was an opportunity for children to learn about the orchestra, the instruments, music and to meet the players. Embracing change at Merrin
M
errin is a school that is passionate, caring and committed to making a difference to the learning of our Merrin stars. We recognise that educational learning is changing, and we embrace change. Over the past year, Merrin has moved quickly to integrate technology, having iPads available in each class. Couple this with netbooks and laptops in the classroom, and our students enjoy a 1:4 ratio in accessibility to enhanced learning. Incorporating modern learning furniture in the classroom environment enables our students to collaborate and share their work more easily. Merrin integrates its modern learning techniques with the traditional, so our students are confident learners in any medium as they move through their schooling.
Pastoral Care and Learning Support are areas of strength at Merrin. There are many pressures on families at present in Christchurch, so the holistic health of our students and community are important to us. Parents are given opportunities to discuss schooling issues regularly and are always welcome in the classroom. Please contact us at Merrin and take the opportunity to view our school as an option for your child.
outh New Brighton School is presently undertaking a schoolwide inquiry about how they can encourage birdlife back to their immediate area. Last year, some of the senior students researched the estuarine water quality and when talking to city council personnel, including rangers, discovered that the ecosystem has changed substantially with saltwater going further up the estuary than before, with our land around the estuary sinking due to the earthquakes. This has meant many plant species can’t survive any longer, so have lost many of the traditional plants and trees around the estuary. This has affected our birdlife. So, across the school students are undertaking a range of inquiries, from the juniors researching what would encourage more of the birds around the school to what types of plantings around the school and along the estuary would bring back the birds.
Room 2 students (pictured) have decided to make bird feeders, and a range of them can be seen around the school. They have found it interesting to find out what different birds like to eat. Other classes are beginning to plan and build bird houses designed to cater for specific breeds and others are looking at plant and tree species. It will be exciting to see what they all come up with to help bring back the birds!

irkwood is a state, co-educational intermediate school. Everything we do, everything we have and all of our plans for the future are designed for children aged 10 to 13 years old. These children are going through a real growth spurt – intellectually, emotionally and physically. The staff at Kirkwood are specialists with these year 7 and 8 children, and recognise the very special attributes and challenges of this age group. Kirkwood is an inclusive school with mixed ability classes and programmes to extend and enrich our children. We are also a very wellresourced school. We have eight specialist
technology rooms, a dedicated art room, spacious grounds, a modern challenge course and hard court areas for netball, basketball and other games. Our teaching resources are modern, our computer network is up-to-date and highly specified and our classrooms are safe and vibrant places for children to work and learn. Kirkwood is a very special school. Our children choose to come here. The children and their parents see something about our school that appeals to them, and I believe our reputation is second to none. I invite you to visit our website www.kirkwood.school.nz, or come and visit our school.

S
t Mark’s School is an integrated co-educational, full primary school from year 0 through to year 8 located in Opawa. The school is steeped in history, being established in 1921 by the vicar of St Mark’s Parish as a day school on the church grounds. Today, the school is situated in more modern buildings, in a peaceful and tranquil environment on Cholmondeley Avenue. The school’s Special Character is its strong affiliation with the Anglican Church, which includes religious instruction and observances. The school’s Mission Statement reads: “The school’s intent is to provide a Christianbased education in a balanced environment, where the children’s individual and collective needs are identified and nurtured”. The school’s curriculum strengths include numeracy and literacy, mathematics, science, social sciences and the arts to name a few, with a very strong emphasis on extra curricular activites, such as music instruction, sports and cultural pursuits.
e are different in many ways from other schools, as we focus on supporting each child to learn the strategies of life and to grow in all areas - emotionally, socially, orally, cognitively and more. We provide a meaningful education and this is evidenced by the fact that past students send their own children to Tamariki. Tamariki School was founded in 1967 by a group of people interested in providing an environment that would support children to develop the awareness and abilities needed to positively impact their own lives. The founders were influenced by the Playcentre movement, the teachings of Dr M Bevan-Brown, a local psychiatrist, and the experiences and writing of the educator A S Neill. A key principle at Tamariki is that play enables children to deepen understandings about their world, themselves and others in a relaxed way. We proudly use the Maori name that has Another principle is community awareness, and frequent whole school meetings are used been gifted to us, as we truly are a childto discuss ideas and to reflect on how one focused school and we welcome children of all cultural backgrounds. person affects another.

uilt just over one year ago, you can grab this opportunity with confidence and move into a basically new home. Built by certified builders and with landscaping designed by Chris Goom, you will know that the platform for success is big and you will not be disappointed. The house consists of 258m2 facing north on a large 766m2 section with school zoning for Christchurch Boys High, St Albans Primary and Heaton Intermediate. Designed for the family with three living spaces, including a home theatre room with surround sound speakers in the ceiling, so it’s just like you’re at the movies! The kitchen is awesome with a butler’s pantry, induction hob and a convection oven, so as you can see it’s been built with a great budget and features all the extras! Heating is simple and efficient with two separate ducted heat pump systems catering for living and bedroom spaces. Warm throughout were the instructions upon design. For the family, there are four bedrooms plus a study and two executive standard bathrooms with undertile heating. Take my word for it, this is a quality property both inside and out and I recommend your viewing. Having already purchased their next property unconditionally, my sellers are realistic and determined to sell on or even before auction day. Don’t make a mistake and miss this one! DELIVERING ON “TRUST” At the risk of being completely ridiculed, I am going to stick my neck out and state that the recently released Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Occupations in New Zealand List continues to categorise real estate agents poorly. It seems we are barely trustworthy based on their survey responses and I truly believe we deserve better. Coming in at a “sad and sorry” number 44 out of 50, it sheds little light on the numerous professional improvements we’ve made as an industry.
If the profession was so poorly trusted then how is it that: • We are trusted to sell an individual’s or families most precious and significant asset- their home; • We are trusted to work with confidential information. • We are trusted to undertake any contracts in a timely and professional fashion plus we are trusted to do the right thing by our owners, and our profession, and as a company Harcourts, are the most trusted real estate brand (Reader’s Digest Award 2014).
Trust occupies a significant and special place. It provides a foundation for crucial decisions at both a personal and societal level, and whilst hard earned, it is much revered.
For me the opportunity to demonstrate and deliver trust occurs at many levels each and every day, and I know I am not the only one.
New Zealand psychologist Dr Sara Chatwin says “We trust those we feel we can rely on – people who are intrinsically stable and dependable”.
That is why it feels like a cliché to state that once again, as a profession we deserve to languish at the bottom of the list.
To my mind, trust requires certainty, credence, dependability, care and a dedication to doing the right thing. The very factors that a great many realtors possess.
I live in hope that next year we might have increased our standing, maybe even achieved into the 30’s, although those single digit trusted professions are probably a longer journey.

Canterbury Repertory Theatre is proud to be bringing this Pulitzer Prize winning play to the stage. Tennessee William's masterpiece is th regarded as an important piece of 20 century American Theatre. The Rep staged this play 37 years ago in 1977, when well know Christchurch Lawyer, Mervyn Glue who died earlier this year, was Big Daddy. Mike Adams is Big Daddy in this production. The action takes place on a single Summer evening in Mississippi. The family has gathered to celebrate Big Daddy's birthday. But all is not well with this family. Today we would call them dysfunctional. Director, Annette Searle, explores the family tensions that simmer beneath the surface, the complex relationships they have with each other. She's looking at what happens when the young can't achieve the expectations put on them by their parents, issues that are very relevant today, and wants to explore homosexuality and the family tensions that arise. Annette also wants to accent the fantasy of “the cat”- the woman, and society's preconceived notions of how she should behave.

Photo credit: Joe Hayes Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is witty and intensely dramatic. Tension accelerates as afternoon rolls into evening. Deceptions and motives are exposed against a backdrop of the sultry South and looming mortality. Annette Searle is a director with much experience in both choreography and direction and has assembled a wonderful cast and crew from some very experienced and excellent auditionees. Mike Adams as Big Daddy, Heather Giles as Big Mama, Charlie Grubb as Brick, Emma Price as Maggie, Julian Anderson as Gooper, Kat Forrester as Mae, Russell Haigh as Reverend Tooker and Warren Grenfell is Doctor Baugh. Expertly stage managed by Bernadette Richardson, with Victoria Southgate – Repertory Liaison, Brenda Hayes – Repertory Stage Director, set and lighting design, and Diane Hyde is Costume designer. A comprehensive education package is available, which schools in particular, will find very helpful.
